Royal palace in Caserta park, the Aqueduct of Vanvitelli and the San Leucio complex Italy
In 1734, Charles III (Charles de Bourbon) became King of Naples. In 1750 he decided to built a new royal palace to exceed the Palace of Versailles and the Royal Palace in Madrid as a symbol of the new kingdom. The monumental complex is special because of the way it brings a magnificent palace together with its park and gardens, as well as the surrounding natural forests, hunting lodges and a silk factory. The Palace is a distinct reflection of the Enlightenment in material form, more integrated than imposed on the natural environment.
The palace is listed in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
